Rauw Alejandro
In the year 2017 Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee released Despacito and it topped the charts for most streamed songs during the course of 6 months. This mix of reggaeton and pop music not only brought attention back to the genre, but also to Latin music generally. The Billboard Top 100 included four mostly Spanish tracks in 2016 as opposed to two in 2015. At the height of Despacito's popularity the track was one of 19 that mainly Spanish made it to the Top 100. The year 2020 will see there will be 41 hits in this category. In the wake of Justin Bieber released his bilingual remix of Despacito in 2017, popular artists began to collaborate with reggaeton performers. Drake and Bad Bunny were part of a team on MIA (2018) as did Madonna and Maluma. Madonna collaborated with Maluma to record Medellin 2019, which was released in 2019. From the beginning of the year 2020, some musicians from reggaeton were unhappy with the way it was moving towards the more mainstream. Rauw Alajandro is a member of a brand new generation looking to alter the course. The genre often included elements of electronic dance music and other genres.
